The characters from the Commedia dell’Arte come from a complex form of theatre that was very popular in Italy and Europe for almost three centuries. These archetypal characters provide a valuable source of expression with distinct ways of movement. In my work with patients undergoing forensic psychiatry and with women in encounter groups, I use the “transposed forms” of the Commedia dell’Arte to allow people to explore different ways of expressing themselves. Through the exaggerated postures and movements, participants can learn to deepen qualities in themselves that are “quintessentially human”. In 2010 nicadanza presented its work on the Commedia dell’Arte to the AADT in Argentina. In 2012, nicadanza participated in the annual Carnival of Cultures in Berlin – we prepared participants from the Workers’ Welfare Organisation (AWO) for the parade and the used the characters from the Commedia dell’Arte in various workshops.
