Megatheropods were the biggest predators to ever walk on land in Earth’s history. From their humble origins as medium-sized hunters in the Triassic, theropods developed into many different types of hunters and even herbivores, filling niches from bone-crushing giants to plant-and-fish-eating lake-lovers. A megatheropod is defined here as an animal descended from the most recent common ancestor of Coelophysis and birds whose adult body mass meets or exceeds five thousand kilograms, or five metric tonnes. That’s eleven thousand pounds, for my fellow Americans who don’t know what the flip a kilometer is. And today, we’re going to discuss the ecology, biology, and evolution of the megatheropod kingdom, with each animal sorted into mass-based tiers, because dinosaur nerds like me are suckers for that kind of thing. Whether you want fun facts to tell your friends or obsessively calculated mass estimates to repost on Discord, I’ve got you covered.
