Rovinj (or Rovigno in Italian) is a very beautiful island which is connected to the mainland of Croatia since the 18th century. This medieval city in Istria was for many centuries part of the Venetian Empire. The Italian influence is noticable. Since WWII Rovinj became a part of Yugoslavia and after the civil war it is part of Croatia. Even today around 10 percent of the population speaks Italian as a mother tongue. The city has 15,000 citizens.
