Taiwan Fantasy — "Giant Tree"

In 2019, while traveling in Tokyo, I visited Meiji Shrine and saw Japan’s largest wooden torii gate. It stood an impressive 21 meters tall, and its girth required five to six people to encircle. What surprised me most was the explanation on the information board, which revealed that the wood used to construct the torii came from Taiwan’s Danda Forestry Area—a hinoki cypress over 1,500 years old. At that moment, I felt a sense of encountering an old friend in a foreign land. I began imagining how these logs had journeyed across the seas from Taiwan to Japan and what stories they might hold.
This is how I envisioned it: In a distant past, the giant trees took root in the mountains of Taiwan, growing slowly and providing shelter to countless creatures. They lived through long periods of peace and tranquility. One day, humans arrived with axes and power drills. The trees were felled in large numbers, sorted, bundled, and shipped overseas. The surviving giant trees could only sing to encourage one another through the night, trembling as they awaited their fate. Yet, fortune did not favor them. Humans continued to return until the forest was reduced to bare ground.
