In July 2016, Recep Tayyip Erdogan survived a military coup that could have ended his career. He came back stronger than ever, centralizing power, reshaping Turkey’s economy, and redefining the country’s place in the world.

But today, Turkey is facing economic turmoil, democratic backsliding, and growing unrest. Erdogan’s arrest of Istanbul’s mayor Ekrem Imamoglu has sparked mass protests, sent markets tumbling, and deepened fears that Turkey is moving away from secular democracy toward religious autocracy.
