In 1749, Peter Kalm noted that the women of Québec curled, dressed, and powdered their hair every single day, "even when they are at home in a dirty jacket and a short coarse skirt that does not reach to the middle of their legs." He describes the importance of hairdressing to French settler women as an "idle custom that had not been introduced in the English settlements."
This is how I dress my hair in the tête de mouton style, which was popular in the French-speaking world from the 1730s to 1750s. I'm self taught in 18th century hairstyling but I've been practicing for several years and I've done this particular style five times, so here's my tutorial!! I'm sure my techniques will continue to evolve as I become more practiced.
