How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter in GM transmissions 4L60-E, 4L65-E and 4L70-E

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER REPLACEMENT
Start loosening oil pan bolts from back to front
Place oil drain pan under the transmission oil pan to catch oil
Slowly undo transmission oil pan bolts around pan and allow the transmission fluid to drain into the container
Remove the transmission oil pan and the transmission oil pan gasket
Remove transmission oil filter by pulling it down
Remove pan transmission pan gasket if it wasn't remove with filter
IMPORTANT: Make sure you remove the filter seal. The filter seal may be stuck in the pump; if necessary, carefully use pliers or another suitable tool to remove the transmission filter seal
IMPORTANT: Make sure you clean transmission oil pan gasket surfaces. All traces of the old gasket material must be removed
IMPORTANT: Clean the Transmission Case gasket surface very well. All traces of the old gasket material must be removed.
Coat new filter seal with clean transmission fluid and install into the transmission case. Tap the seal into place gently using a appropriate socket size (19mm for my Hummer H3).
Install the new filter into the case
Position gasket on top of pan properly
Install the oil pan and a new gasket. Tighten bolts by hands

IMPORTANT: Tighten the oil pan to transmission case in criss cross pattern to your vehicle torq spec. For my Hummer H3: 16 N.m (12 lb ft)
Finish tightening to your vehicle torque spec. For my Hummer H3 - 70 N.m (51 lb ft)
To start filling new transmission fluid to the proper level - measure how much of old fluid you drained. Always use the proper automatic transmission fluid listed. Using incorrect automatic transmission fluid may damage the vehicle.

Before checking the fluid level, perform the following:
1. Start the engine and park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Apply the parking brake and place the shift lever in PARK (P).
3. Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through each
gear range, pausing for about 3 seconds in each range. Then,
move the shift lever back to PARK (P).
4. Allow the engine to idle 500-800 RPM for at least 1 minute.
Slowly release the brake pedal.
5. Keep the engine running and observe the transmission fluid
temperature (TFT)
If TFT temperature is 27-32°C (80-90°F) - use Cold Check Procedure
If TFT temperature is 82-93°C (180-200°F) - use Hot Check Procedure
IMPORTANT: Check the cold fluid level reading for initial fill only

Hot Check Procedure:
Use this procedure to check the transmission fluid level
when the Transmission fluid temperature is between
82-93°C (180-200°F) and engine is idling. To assist in reaching the correct temperature range of 82-93°C (180-200°F), drive the vehicle in second gear
at no more than 65 mph until the desired temperature is reached.
