SHY - Breakaway. Live at the NEC, Birmingham, 2008

A long story - stay with me :-)

Back in 2008, Shy was invited to play at the NEC as part of Music Live. It was a cracking gig as I recall, and we on top form. Shortly after the gig my late friend, and member of the Magnificent 7, John Budden popped round with his camera to let me transfer his photos and videos from the gig onto my computer. During the transfer I made a simple error and when I later looked I couldn't find where they had gone.

Later on, I got hold of the desk mix from the gig which sounded great, but it was just not quite good enough to release as an audio product.

Fast forward almost 11 years and while looking for some pics to put on my home studio wall I found John's photos from the NEC. Nestled amongst them was a complete video of Breakaway - our opening song. I couldn't wait to have a look and a listen, but unfortunately the camcorder mic had been overwhelmed by the volume (of Steve's guitar most likely 🤣) and it was just distortion. I was disappointed but then I had an idea. I replaced the camcorder sound with the desk mix, lined it all up and.... hey presto. 100% live, no overdubs, no backing tracks. Just me, Tony Mills , Roy Davis, Bob Richards and Ian Richard Wills doing our thing. And of course Steve Harris, absolutely on fire as always. Not as prominent in the mix as I'd have liked (due to the aforementioned volume of his amp he didn't really need to go through the PA) but still clearly audible.
