Helmand officials on battle against Taliban

(22 Dec 2015) Fierce battles were under way on Tuesday between Afghan forces and the Taliban in southern Helmand province, where the insurgents have almost completely captured a strategic district.
Fighting raged in the Sangin district, where an official said the army base was the only area that had not fallen to the Taliban.
Helmand governor Merza Khan Rahimi said government troops had been able to deliver supplies to troops holed up inside the base on Tuesday and stressed the government had a "special agenda" to solve the area's security problems.
A British Ministry of Defense statement late on Monday said "a small number of UK personnel" had been deployed to Helmand "in an advisory role".
Britain has 450 troops in Afghanistan as part of NATO's training mission.
Helmand is important to the Taliban.
The lush southern province is home to endless poppy fields and the source of almost all the world's opium, which helps fund the insurgency.
