Hidden heritage of

The house of Jadulal Mullick,Pathuriaghata.

Pathuriaghata Street is a narrow lane in a quiet north Calcutta neighbourhood, Jaculal Mullick's house, at number 67, was once an opulent establishment. The statue that welcomes one at the entrance is that of a Greek sentry, but the cultural history of the house is markedly Bengali.
Jadulal Mullick belonged to a family of Vaishya gold merchants. His grandfather Nemaicharan Mullick, besides being a banker, businessman and trader, was also a philanthropist. He was a moneylender, and not an insignificant one at that; he had lent the East India Company a sum of Rs 48 lakhs. Nemaicharan left behind vast landed property, a few estates, jewellery and cash exeeding Rs 3 crores. To say nothing of the Rs 3 crores that he had invested in salt trade, which the family could never recover. Nemaicharan's son Matilal adopted his sister-in-law's only son Jadulal.

Jadulal, in his turn, became a highly respected man in 19*-century Calcutta. In 1873, he was appointed the Commissioner of the Calcutta Municipality, a post he held for twelve years. The house at 67, Pathuriaghat Street was built by the then well-known construction company Mackintosh Burn.
