In Part 5 of Railroaded: The Spruce Pine Race Riot, we review the events leading up to the trials of John Goss and members of the mob who rioted in Spruce Pine on September 26 and 27, along with a discussion of the trials themselves. Particular attention is given to Governor Morrison's insistence on a speedy trial process, pushing court and county officials to schedule a special term of court for Goss's trial. A discussion on suggested punishment for mob members is covered, including a letter to Morrison from prominent Mitchell County citizen Jason E. Burleson who suggested punishment be given to put a stop to events like the riot, since similar happenings had occurred in Mitchell County in prior years.
Goss's trial lasts only 30 minutes, and he is found guilty and sentenced to death in the electric chair. The start of proceedings concerning the mob members also takes place, with much of the actions associated with these cases being continued to the November, 1923 session of Mitchell County Superior Court.
