Uncover the Magic of Philly: Street Art, Fashion, Culinary Delights & More | 1st Look (FULL EPISODE)

Welcome to Destination: Philly. Join 1st Look guest host Sibley Scoles as she explores Philadelphia's thriving creative sectors and dives deep into what makes the city of brotherly love and sisterly affection the vibrant community that it is through interviews with its incredible dancers, street art muralists, entrepreneurs, James Beard Award Foundation-winning chefs, music recording artists, and fashion designers.

First, we meet up with Conrad Benner, founder and celebrated curator of Philly's Street Arts department, who gives Sibley a thorough walking tour of several of the most popular and fun neighborhoods, including Gayborhood, Fishtown, and South Street. We explore and learn how these neighborhoods have evolved throughout the decades, along with the type of impact they've had on local history that's now represented through commissioned mural projects. (We also get to experience Philly's public transportation system through a quick ride on the El train, with a stop at Ishkabibble's to taste their famous cheesesteak and Gremlin beverage!)

Next, we sync up with Ben “Boxwon” Barnes, a five-time world champion and leader of Philly’s longest running breaking crew, who is now bringing this dance form 2024 Olympics debut. We learn more about Hip Hop Fundamental's origin story as a group, their journey to the 2024 Paris Olympics, and what dancing and movement mean to them. (Bonus: we also get to see some of Sibley’s hip-hop dance moves slip into the mix!)

After that, we get to explore the well-known restaurant “Her Place” supper club which originated as a pop-up during 2020 quarantine, but ended up becoming a successful culinary gem in the area! Sibley has the chance to enjoy a delicious multi-course spread and sit-down chat with a few close chef friends, who happen to be James Beard Award legends and have catapulted Philly to the top of the nation's food scene! Along the way, we make a quick stop at the Yowie, a boutique hotel, lifestyle shop and design studio where pretty much all the decor in each bright and airy room (crafted with love and care by independent artisans) is for sale — including the paint on the walls!

We then head over to the Crane Arts building for a lovely visit with Dr. Kimberly McGlonn, CEO and founder of the Black-owned, women-led B Corp clothing brand Grant Blvd, followed by a tour of Project Runway All-Star Prajjé Oscar's colorful design studio. Sibley chats with both of these gifted and socially conscious designers about Philly’s burgeoning and fearless fashion scene, their personal inspirations and cultural upbringings, and what the concept of style and reinvention means to them. She even gets an exciting sneak peak at their latest (and utterly gorgeous) collections!

And last but not least, Sibley has the pleasure of dropping by Rec Philly to lay down a catchy track about doughnuts in the recording booth with with 76ers personality Christian Crosby and Philadelphia Eagles phenomenon DJ Diamond Kuts, following by a wonderful discussion with these two talents about their music creation process and how their love of community and appreciation of their one-of-a-kind Philly experiences has meaningfully impacted their craft.
