I had the opportunity to try out a few pairs of microphones commonly used for drum overheads, and recorded the results! I usually use my AKG 214's as overheads, but was able to try out a pair of Shure SM81's and a pair of Neumann KM100s with an AK40 Cardioid capsule, keeping all three sets cardioid.
The Neumann KM100s are the predecessor to the highly regarded Neumann 184's, so I was curious to hear the difference between the microphones I had been using and the Neumanns. The differences weren't as hugely noticeable as I had expected, but I still was able to capture some interesting results!
Which ones sound best to you, and what do you like about them? Let me know in the comments!
*All audio was recorded through a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 at 44.1k/24-bit resolution.
