📃 Description: 📃
The dinosaurs are preceded on this list by some of the most diminutive of species, Compsognathus and Micropachycephalosaurus, each shorter than a meter. Small, agile theropods and ornithischians, both presumably depending upon velocity or disguise to survive, begin the size gradations higher on the list. Further up, species of the likes of Velociraptor, Protoceratops, and Oviraptor remained relatively diminutive but already developed distinctive specializations, feathers among them and also specialized jaws.
With increasing height of the dinosaurs, the medium-sized herbivores and predators such as Coelophysis and Ornithomimus appear, going up to a height of almost two meters. The larger predators such as Carnotaurus and Dilophosaurus are even taller, and their heights reach three meters and above. All these theropods have powerful legs, skull crests characteristic of them, and sharp hunting teeth.
Some of the most well-known dinosaurs, Stegosaurus and Triceratops, reach towering heights, their protective armor such as plates and horns ensuring they are quite formidable to predators. The roster goes on to include towering apex predators such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Spinosaurus, both reaching heights above most land creatures during their respective times. These intimidating theropods possessed powerful limbs, formidable bites, and specialized features for catching large prey.
The introduction of the largest dinosaurs brings with it the enormous sauropods, such as Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus, and Argentinosaurus. These herbivorous long-necks grew to incredible heights, with some growing over 12 meters at the shoulders and heads reaching even higher. Their size probably kept predators away, and their long necks enabled them to browse at treetop level, eating huge quantities of vegetation. The tallest of them all, Argentinosaurus, was more than 15 meters tall, which was among the tallest land animals ever.
