The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage for devotees of Shiva, known as Kanwarias or Bhole, to Haridwar and other pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand and Bihar to collect holy water from the Ganges River. They carry this water back to their local Shiva temples to anoint the Shiva lingam. The yatra takes place during the Hindu month of Shravan, which usually falls in July-August.

The Kanwar (or Kānvar/ Kāvaḍ) Yātrā is an annual pilgrimage of devotees of Shiva, known as Kānvarias (Hindustani: [कावड़िया]) or "Bhole" (Hindustani: [भोले]), to Hindu pilgrimage places of Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri (Uttarakhand) and Ajgaibinath Temple in Sultanganj, Bhagalpur (Bihar) in order to fetch holy waters of Ganges River. Millions of pilgrims fetch sacred water from river Ganga and carry on their shoulders for hundreds of miles to offer it in their local Shiva shrines, or specific temples such as Pura Mahadeva temple in Baghpat and Augharnath temple in Meerut, Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, Baidyanath temple in Deoghar, etc.

Purpose:
The primary purpose of the Kanwar Yatra is to collect water from the Ganges and offer it to Lord Shiva.

Pilgrimage Sites:
The most common pilgrimage sites include Haridwar, Gaumukh, and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar.

Kanwarias:
Devotees, often referred to as Kanwarias or Bhole, participate in the yatra, carrying the holy water in decorated pots (kanwars) suspended from a pole balanced on their shoulders.

Historical Context:
The yatra is linked to the Hindu legend of Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) and Ravana bringing Ganga water to cure Lord Shiva's poison-induced illness.

Modern Significance:
The Kanwar Yatra has grown in popularity and scale, becoming one of the largest religious pilgrimages in India.

Haridwar is a major center for the yatra, attracting a vast number of pilgrims during the month of Shravan.
