Italy: Desperate Rescue at Sea

"They must be called boats of death. We had no other choice."

Tens of thousands are fleeing from the North African coast, seeking safety in Europe via a dangerous Mediterranean Sea crossings. Many are Syrian refugees, many others come from Sub-Saharan Africa - all risk their lives.

Their rescue - part of the Italian Navy's 'Mare Nostrum' search and rescue operation - is the end of peril, but not the end of uncertainty, they must now face a new life on an unknown continent.
