The longest free standing escalator in Germany is located close to my home at Zeche Zollverein in Essen. Listen with me as I explore the sound inside the moving stairs, hear the rumble, the chatter, the boom and the clatter.
Ka-Ching.
No eq, editing (except for length) or layering has been used for the escalators, all sounds are raw out of the recorder.
Thanks to #ZecheZollverein for the short notice video permit, to Felix Horn for the film, to @schertleraudio for the fantastic #Contactmic .

Disclosure: I am part of the professional partners program of Schertler. I used and recommended their contact mics before and was interested in the noises of the world heritage in Essen without any external input. I didn't get any financial benefits for recording this video. If you are interested in the contact mic, you can read up on it here: https://www.schertler.com/en_CH/swiss...
It might even sound better as in this video, as I used the green putty wrong (supposed to leave a hole in the middle).
Join me on an acoustic journey to Zeche Zollverein in Essen, Germany, a UNESCO World Heritage site and iconic industrial landmark! In this video, I'm using a contact microphone to capture the hidden soundscape of this steel colossus, transforming it into an experimental sound experience.
My mission? To make Germany's longest free-standing escalator 'speak' through the power of field recording. You'll hear:
The rattling gearbox, the mechanical heart of Zeche Zollverein, vibrating through the steel handrail.
The surprising transformation of sound on the orange plastic, morphing vibrations into a mysterious drone with electronic interferences.
The rhythmic clacking and pulsating low mids at the escalator's foot, punctuated by a unique 'ka-ching' sound.
The multi-layered drone and harsh murmur of the handrail, a whisper of the past.
The calming, faint and deeply satisfying vibrations of the stairs.
