Una delle giornate più suggestive del nostro viaggio in Cina inizia da Xinping, con scene di pesca e immagini di vita del porto da National Geographic. La barcaiola alla fine non se l’è sentita di traghettarci, nonostante le nostre insistenze. Però il trasporto sulle zattere alla fine si è potuto fare. Questo è uno dei problemi di comunicazione che abbiamo avuto in Cina. Molto spesso, quando ci è sembrato di comprenderci con le persone del posto, in seguito sono sorte complicazioni e alla fine le richieste sono finite in un nulla di fatto. Imbarcate le bici sulla zattera scendiamo il corso del Lijang fino a Caoping ammirando dall’acqua le grotte di Xingping, i padiglioni, i templi, i ponti in pietra e le tradizionali barche. Il paesaggio naturale è molto famoso perché raffigurato sul retro delle banconote da 20 yuan, visibile dal Yellow Cloth Shoal. Da questa posizione si osservano i pescatori mentre, in piedi su zattere di bambù, catturano i pesci con l’aiuto di cormorani addestrati sullo sfondo della collina Laozhai. E’ una Cina sublime, a noi completamente sconosciuta, immersa in una luce rarefatta che crea un effetto di sospensione. A Caoping risaliamo i ripidi tornanti che collegano il porticciolo tra palme e vegetazione tropicale. Sull’altopiano pascolano bovini e l’atmosfera è di nuovo cambiata. Infine c’immettiamo sulla statale per la volata finale verso Guilin, ultima tappa di un giorno che non dimenticheremo mai.

One of the most evocative days of our trip to China begins in Xinping, with fishing scenes and shootings of port life in the style of the National Geographic. In the end, the boatwoman did not feel like carrying us on her rafting, despite our insistence. However, we finally could take the bikes on a raft. This is one of the communication problems we had in China. Apparently we understood each other with the locals, but some kind of complications arose frequently and in the end our issues often ended up in nothing. Finally we put the bikes on the raft and we went down the course of the Lijang to Caoping, admiring the Xingping caves, the pavilions, the temples, the stone bridges and the traditional boats from the river. The natural landscape is very famous because it is depicted on the back of the 20 yuan banknote, visible from the Yellow Cloth Shoal. From that point you can observe the fishermen while, standing on bamboo rafts, they catch the fish with the help of trained cormorants with the Laozhai hill in the background. It is a sublime picture of China, a completely unknown side for us, and the countryside in that rarefied light creates an effect of suspension. In Caoping we climb the steep hairpin bends that connect the small port among the palm trees and the tropical vegetation. Cattle graze on the plateau and the atmosphere has changed once again. Finally we enter the state road for our last sprint towards Guilin, the last stop of a day we will never forget.
