In "Let the Spirit Lead You: The Lost Art of Improvisation in the Black Church," gospel soprano Tiffany Mosley and pianist Gregory Kelly step into the studio to rediscover a sacred tradition, when music in the Black church was guided by the Spirit, not a set list.
Through song, conversation, and spontaneous collaboration, they reflect on how gospel’s communal, call-and-response roots have shifted toward structured, performance-driven worship. What unfolds is both a musical dialogue and a meditation on faith, creativity, and the power of listening — to one another and to God.
Filmed in one take with no overdubs, this vérité short celebrates the raw, spiritual honesty that defines Black sacred music — and the improvisational art form that continues to shape it.
