Welcome to the newly transformed Outpatients A at Darlington Memorial Hospital – where healing meets art.
In a powerful blend of healthcare and creativity, the Outpatients A department has undergone a £1.2 million transformation — not just in its facilities, but in the patient experience.
Thanks to the generosity of former respiratory consultant Dr. Alwyn Foden and the support of the CDDFT Charity, the space now features stunning local photography and thoughtful design.
Ten framed photos of iconic landmarks — like Raby Castle and High Force — now line the main corridor. These vibrant images, all captured by Dr. Foden himself, bring color, familiarity, and comfort to the space.
A custom mural, dementia-friendly design elements, and collaborative input from hospital staff — including dementia specialist nurse Janet Mortimer — help make the department more accessible and welcoming for all patients, especially those with cognitive impairments.
This is more than just a makeover — it’s a heartwarming story of community, compassion, and the healing power of art.
