How To Acid Wash A Cartridge Filter

Here I show you how to acid wash a standard pool cartridge filter. Only do this if absolutely necessary as it will probably shorten your cartridges life span. If there is extreme staining like in this case and high filter pressure than an acid wash is in order.

Currently you can get 520 sq ft cartridges for about $75 each or $300 total. The smaller sizes are a little cheaper. The downside of pool ownership is investing in product and up keep. Regular filter cleaning is the key to extend the life of your filter cartridges. The ones in my pool are about eight years old and still good as I clean them at least every six months very thoroughly. So regular cleaning will help.

If there is a lot of grease or oil on the cartridges, use a degreaser first to get the oils off to make the acid wash effective. Here are some popular degreasers:

Blue Wave cleaning agent

This particular filter was so new that it didn't need any degreaser. There was also no calcium buildup, just very bad organic staining.

Remember that Muriatic Acid is a very strong and dangerous chemical. Use with extreme caution and always wear safety gear. When you do the acid wash you just want acid and water in the bucket and no other chemicals. The manufacturer recommends no less than a 4 to 1 ratio (Four parts water to one part acid). That is the extreme ratio. I use a 20 to 1 ratio which is more than sufficient. I soaked these for 20 minutes. And that was sufficient. The Acid is a very strong chemical. Do not pour acid directly on the cartridges from the bottle. You will ruin them.
