Organic waste when left in nature decomposes producing methane gas and also smelly water known as leachate that can pollute ground water beyond repair. Furthermore this decomposition not only takes a long time it does not result in production of very beneficial product.
On the other hand this waste can be converted to organic compost usable for agricultural purposes. Use of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) is a proven technique to convert organic waste to good quality compost and within 15 days cycle. The end product also contains larvae rich in protein that can be used as chicken and fish feed.
BSFL life cycle is however delicate and needs special care especially during fly and eggs stages. A SWM team is successfully managing a BSFL rearing and waste treatment facility in Sahiwal, Pakistan.
