The Eighth Spencer J. Buchanan Lecture in the Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M Univeristy was given by Professor Harry G. Poulos on 3 November 2000.

"Foundation Settlement Analysis - Practice Versus Research"

Abstract:

This paper examines and evaluates some common methods of foundation settlement prediction in the light of recent research. Four common problems are considered: settlement of shallow foundations on the clay, settlement of shallow foundations on sand, analysis of strip and raft foundations, and the settlement of pile groups. The outcome of the evaluation is a recommendation on whether a method should be adopted, adapted, or discarded. The crucial importance of appropriate assessment of the relevant geotechnical parameters is emphasized.

About Harry G. Poulos:

Professor Harry G. Poulos obtained his Bachelor's and PhD degrees from the University of Sydney and graduated in 1965. He joined the Department of Civil Engineering in 1965 and became a Professor of Civil Engineering in 1982, a position which he still holds. In 1989, he joined the geotechnical consulting firm of Coffey Partners International, and is now a Senior Principal and Director of Technical Innovation of Coffey Geosciences. He has published three books and over 200 technical papers. He has been involved in a large number of consulting projects around the world, and continues to be involved in funded research on pile foundations. He has received a number of awards including the 1995 ASCE State of the Art Award, and the 1989 Rankine Lectureship. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineers in Australia, a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. In 1993, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to engineering.
