BMW 330i Water Pump Replacement DIY (2019-Present BMW G20, G22 430i, G42 230i)

►After two generations of electric water pumps, BMW returned to the classic mechanically driven pump on the B48 engine. We don't have any specific reason, but one can surmise that it relates to cost and reliability. Either way, the mechanical pump is still a wear item, meaning you'll have to replace it when it eventually fails. The general service life for these modern BMW water pumps is around 80,000 miles. However, when it goes, it goes, and there's no driving the car once it fails.

Replacing the water pump on your B48 engine is fiddly work. Before reaching the pump, you'll need to remove lots of clips and plastic bits and drain the cooling system. That said, it's not overly complicated, as the worst thing you'll battle with is plastic clips. Failing to replace the pump when it fails in an effort to prolong the repair will only lead to significant engine damage.
