The two countries Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro were first seen in 1961. Excluding a small break in the late 1970's, Yugoslavia was an annual competitor in Eurovision, until the country broke apart in 1992. This led to the participation of all individual countries that used to make up Yugoslavia in 1993 and the years after. Serbia & Montenegro took the longest out of them to appear in the contest, having first appeared in 2004. In that form, they competed only twice, with a supposed third attempt in 2006 that was withdrawn due to allegations of rigging. They still voted in the contest, but did not participate. In late 2006, the two split apart, and Serbia and Montenegro both became separate competitors in Eurovision as well, and have competed separately ever since.
Yugoslavia won the contest once in 1989 with Riva and their song "Rock Me". Given Yugoslavia's age of competing, they never competed in any semifinal. Serbia & Montenegro have a 2nd place result as their record result, which was achieved in 2004 by Željko Joksimović with "Lane Moje". They last appeared in 2005's grand final as an auto-qualfier with the band No Name and their song "Zauvijek Moja", which finished in 7th place.
