Program Notes:
In the wake of Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s
retirement, we celebrate what would have been Studio Ghibli’s
30th birthday with the enchanted fruits of decades of collaboration
between Miyazaki and composer Joe Hisaishi. From Jiro’s dream of
flight in The Wind Rises (2013) to the enigmatic and cuddly forest
creatures of My Neighbor Totoro (1993) to the strange magic of
Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) to Chihiro’s innocence and bravery in
Spirited Away (2001), the legacy of Miyazaki and Hisaishi lives on in
poignant characters, beautiful scores, and love for bus-shaped cats.
