Power Coefficient of Resistance (PCR) refers to the change in a resistor's value due to self-heating when power is applied, a key factor in maintaining circuit accuracy.
In this demonstration, VPG Foil Resistors compare the PCR performance of a precision wirewound resistor and a Bulk Metal® Foil resistor. While both resistors are powered under the same conditions, the wirewound resistor shows measurable drift, while the foil resistor remains remarkably stable.
This difference is largely due to construction. Wirewound resistors can experience drift under power due to uneven heat dissipation and tension variations in the winding. Bulk Metal® Foil resistors, on the other hand, are engineered with a solid resistive foil element that maintains consistent thermal properties and electrical stability.
