I have often played this before the Three Hours on Good Friday. The dramatic contrasts and pauses seem to portray the agony of the cross. At one point, massive chords declaim the chorale, “Out of the Depths I Cry to Thee.” At last, it is finished, and we softly hear two more chorales: “What My God Wills Shall Always Happen” and “What God Does Is Indeed Well-done.”
