Hells Hole is one of the most impressive Karst features in the Limestone Coast. It is a cenote- a sinkhole that extends into open water and approximately 45m in diameter, 25m deep and 38m below the viewing platform. A walking tail has been established at the site, which meanders uphill to the sinkhole with an easy walk to the car park. Take a deep breath before you step onto the viewing platform - the view in the Hells Hole is like nothing you experience before.
While anyone can visit and take in the view from the platform, Hells hole is also popular among divers. To dive at Hells Hole, divers must obtain a Forestry SA permit and be a member of either the Cave Diving Association of Australia or Australian Cave Explorers.
Caroline Sinkhole: Found in Penambol Conservation Park, Caroline Sinkhole is around 50 metres in diameter and has a walkway built out over the edge so that you can give yourself a dose of height vertigo should the fancy take you. Archaeological digs around the ledges of the hole have unearthed ancient evidence of the local Bunganditj people - an early Indigenous tribe - who probably used it for shelter. During wet periods, water can still be found in the hole.
On our Jpurney to the Penambol Conservation Park we drove through some beautiful pine forests. Hells hole is only about 20 kms from Mount Gambier. We also witnessed some magnificent wild life while we were on our journey that includes yellow tailed black Cockatoos. We also come across some magnificent field mushrooms (fungus). Butterfly walk was our last destination. This was one of the best National Park Experience I had.
