Do you have frosts in your area? Are you worried about how your winter veggie plants will survive frosts? Many people are hesitant to let their winter veggies brave the elements. Canberra Seed Savers wants to show you that many plant types can tolerate fairly hard frosts. In this informative video Thea shows us the before and after of several winter veggies on a -3ºC Canberra morning. We tour Thea’s garden and see frozen solid plants, then return later to check which plants survived. There is something for everyone, with in ground plants, wicking bed plants, and seedlings checked over for frost damage.
What varieties can tolerate winter in Canberra?
• Brassicas – the cabbage family. That is, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, rocket, radishes and asian greens
• Alliums – the onion family. Onion, garlic, spring onion, garlic chives, chives.
• Many lettuce varieties – especially from locally saved seed
• Many pea varieties – snow pea, shelling peas, sugar snap. Although flowers will need to be protected in order to set pods.
• Most woody herbs – such as thyme, rosemary, oregano
• Surprisingly, strawberries!
Who are the Canberra Seed Savers?
The Canberra Seed Savers are a network of urban food growers and local farmers working cooperatively to protect our abundant, common heritage of open-pollinated food seeds. We swap and share seeds, learn and teach about seed growing and saving, and together build a resilient community network – a ‘living seed bank’. We welcome you to join us and be part of the local network of seed savers, growers and guardians. Seed saving is for everyone.
