ArcGIS ModelBuilder Hack: Nested Iteration Boosts Performance!
When building models in ArcGIS ModelBuilder, it's crucial to understand how iteration works. A nested model is required when part of a model does not need to run multiple times. If an iterator is added to a model, all tools in that model are run for each value the iterator returns. This can lead to unnecessary repetitions and slow processing times. By nesting iteration in a sub-model, you can control when and how iteration occurs, collecting data first and then processing it downstream. I recently tested this approach with two models: one with nested iteration and the other without. The results were astonishing! The nested model completed in just 14 minutes, while the non-nested model took almost 42 minutes.
