I’ve spent more than five decades studying languages — over fifty in total — and I can converse in more than thirty of them. But when I discovered a British adventurer from the 1800s who claimed to speak a hundred languages and read another hundred, I had to find out the truth.

His name was Sir John Bowring — a linguist, traveler, and diplomat whose obsession with languages took him from prison cells in France to the governor’s palace in Hong Kong.
