This lesson takes a classic 12-bar blues in the key of G and pushes it into a funkier direction using 9th and 13th chords instead of standard dominant 7s.
The progression stays rooted in a traditional I–IV–V (G–C–D), but the voicings and rhythm lean toward a James Brown-influenced feel.
We use partial chord shapes to create fills between phrases, explore tougher but more expressive voicings, and look at substituting Bm7♭5 (half-diminished) in place of G9 when a bass player is covering the root.
Toward the turnaround, extra colour tones are added to form D13, C13, and G13, showing how extended chords can add funk without losing the blues.
A challenging but musical lesson focused on groove, chord colour, and expanding your blues vocabulary.
