Mechanical seals are at the heart of potable water production. They act as barriers, preventing leaks and outside contamination from entering potable water processing. Before 1988, mechanical seals were typically approved only as part of larger assemblies like pumps. Today, in most areas, mechanical seals must meet specific NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 standards to ensure safe drinking water. Within most of the U.S. states and Canada, drinking agencies require compliance with the NSF 61 standard. These standards set criteria for chemical contaminants in materials, components and devices that may leach into drinking water.
John Crane offers mechanical seal options to meet NSF 61, including a range of standard cartridge seals and split seals. Split seals are often used for large pumps to save time and money, because they can be installed without removing the pump, offering quicker installation than other seals. However, split seals require specialized know-how and training to properly connect them to reduce the risk of leaks. Cartridge seals are preferred for smaller pumps. They are affordable, easy to install and offer maintenance advantages over split seals.
Every mechanical seal counts in delivering safe, clean potable water. Contact our team today to secure the health of your community with the right mechanical seal.
