When it comes to successful placements, your objectives need to be SMART, but how do you make your goals SMART? In this video, I give you examples of some first-year student nursing objectives and walk you through why it is important to make SMART objectives.

SMART Stands for:
+Specific – keep your objectives focused and detailed where needed. Sometimes in nursing, our goals are long-term but your environment and personal views will change how you interpret the goal you’ve discussed making it hard to keep on track, and even can be demotivating because it is not tangible for you.
+Measurable – there has to be a way to measure your objective, to measure your success – it gives you a real sense of success and celebration when you have achieved it, or certainly on your way to achieving it. This in turn will maintain your motivation! Give yourself clear milestones that you can achieve…
+Achievable/attainable – your objectives should provide you with a challenge because let's face it, nursing is challenging, but it is so important to keep your objectives within your reach! Don’t set yourself up to fail, this is one sure way to absolutely threaten your self-confidence! This may mean that you can break your objective down into a few goals – but if you think about it, we do that naturally by setting specific objectives achievable to the stage of the programme you are at!
+Realistic – setting your goals beyond your scope of practice, or even ability, is going to attack your self-confidence again, as it has the potential to overwhelm you! SO set your objective to something that is realistic to your level of knowledge, skills, and performance!
+Timely - pop a date in! if you don’t, you will not be holding yourself to anything as you could give your whole career to hit an objective. Setting a deadline will provide you with internal motivation (think about your assignments…), and it will give you a good understanding of your progress to date.
