Flying under a Wing in South Africa - During the Anglo-Boer war, Pretoria was strategic for the South African region and it needed protection against potential adversaries. Fort Daspoortrand is one of four Fort's built in the Pretoria area. Fort Daspoortrand was completed in November 1898. The Boers occupied the Fort from 1898 to 1900 and British troops occupied the fort from 1900 to 1904. Built under commander-general, P.J. Joubert, he decided on forts rather than towers, towers couldn't house a considerable garrison, but forts could.
