By the end of the decade, or possibly a few years later, the Altamont Corridor Express is expected to begin service on a new route to a station that would be built adjacent to the Union City BART Station. Trains would travel westbound along the usual route, but at Niles Junction, instead of entering the Niles Subdivision and traveling southwest towards Fremont and San Jose, they would continue on the Oakland Subdivision, which leads directly to the future station. Here is a view of the proposed route from a BART train, in which the tracks are in the same right of way. We start at the Niles Subdivision west of Niles Junction, near Shinn Street, and parallel the future route to the Union City station, where the new station will be built.
