"Cantate Domino", by Hans Leo Hassler, is a four-part motet often sung for the Fourth Sunday after Easter. TRANSLATON: Sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord all the earth and bless his name. Proclaim his promise of salvation from day to day. Proclaim his glory to all nations and his mighty acts to all peoples. (Psalm 96: 1-3)
"Cantate Domino" is usually sung as an unaccompanied piece, but the use of an organ (to reinforce the voice parts) is also appropriate. It should be performed with vitality and attention to natural word stress. Since all voice parts are of equal importance, it should be sung to achieve a good balance between all four parts. The key has been transposed up one whole step, for SATB, from the original setting as Renaissance vocal music was often composed for a men or boys choir.
