It's not visible from the ground, but if you look closely, a small cavity can be seen just behind the Sphinx’s right ear.
When explorers in the 20th century first documented it, speculation ran wild. Some believed it could be a mechanism to unlock a secret entrance to a hidden passage or chamber possibly even leading to the legendary Hall of Records—an ancient archive, said to contain the lost wisdom of ancient civilizations.
But when Zahi Hawass and Mark Lehner later drilled under the left paw of the sphinx, where the lost hall of records was rumoured to be, all they found was fossils.
Years earlier, egyptologists had inserted a camera into the cavity behind the ear, hoping to find further evidence. As the footage played, the room held its breath and waited to see what was truly inside. But to everyone’s disappointment, the cavity led nowhere and To this day, its presence remains a mystery!
