"Spine surgery is often misunderstood and feared, but it's important to know that it is only recommended for specific, serious conditions. According to Dr. Imtiaz Ghani, spine surgery is reserved for ""red flag signs""—such as radiating pain with numbness or weakness, gait disturbances, and loss of bladder/bowel control. These may be signs of infections like tuberculosis, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, tumors, or spinal deformities like scoliosis and kyphosis. Traumatic injuries from road accidents causing spinal cord damage may also require urgent surgical intervention. However, for chronic nonspecific low back pain without identifiable causes, surgery is not indicated.
