High on a limestone cliff, at the gateway to the Priorat mountains, stands Siurana, once the last Moorish stronghold in Catalonia. Built as a fortress in the 9th century, its position seemed impregnable, with sheer drops on all sides and a commanding view of the valleys below.
For three centuries it resisted Christian advance, even after Tortosa and Lleida had already fallen. Finally, in 1153, Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona led the siege that ended Muslim rule in Catalonia. The place has since become legend, not least for the dramatic tale of the Moorish queen who, rather than surrender, spurred her horse over the precipice — the Salt de la Reina Mora, where the horse’s hoofprint is said to remain carved in the rock.
Siurana’s history did not end with the Middle Ages. For centuries, its fortress walls were repurposed, and under the Spanish monarchy it became a prison for nobles and members of the political elite. Even King John II of Aragon was held here during the Catalan Civil War. After regaining his throne, he personally ordered the castle demolished so it could never again be used to cage the powerful.
The site still bears witness to its darker uses. In front of the small Romanesque church of Santa Maria lies a stone hearth, three metres square, with iron loops set into the rock for shackles. Here, captives were chained and fire consumed the condemned. Later, during the time of the Inquisition and its forerunners, Siurana became not just a prison but a place of execution. Against this grim backdrop, the Moorish queen’s leap seems almost merciful, she may well have spared herself the far worse fate of chains and burning at the hands of her conquerors.
Beneath the cliffs lies the Siurana reservoir, a modern addition that provides water to the Priorat and Baix Camp regions. In recent years, drought left its levels worryingly low, exposing long-submerged valley floors. Only now, with rains returning, is the waterline slowly recovering. From above, the turquoise reservoir mirrors the cliffs and terraces, a striking contrast between timeless stone and ever-changing water. Together, they tell a story of endurance — of people, of nature, and of a place where legend and history meet.
