Gaming the Financial System | The New School

Join Journalism + Design for this panel discussion about the challenges and pitfalls of designing games based on complex, real-world systems. The creators of Kleptocrat, a new iOS game that explores the patterns and tactics of hiding dirty money, will share how they turned a trove of financial crime research into an engrossing, playful experience while staying true to the material. The New Yorker’s Mark Singer will moderate this conversation, featuring Jim Mintz, the founder and CEO of the global investigations firm The Mintz Group, J+D Design Lead Irwin Chen, and BumbleBear Games Co-founder Josh DeBonis. The group will describe their decision-making process and talk about the difficulty of creating game experiences that are both educational and entertaining.

Journalism + Design is an interdisciplinary program at The New School that merges design methodologies and systems thinking in an effort to untangle the complex problems of 21st century journalism. Through classes, workshops, and events, we seek to inspire journalists to imagine and implement what the future of journalism might look like. We are a place for playful experimentation, where new forms and unexpected strategies emerge.

Jim Mintz, founder and CEO of the Mintz Group, a global investigations firm. He has spent more than 30 years conducting investigations across the globe, mainly for law firms and general counsel.

Irwin Chen, design lead for the Journalism + Design Program at Eugene Lang College and an assistant professor at Parsons School of Design.

Josh DeBonis, award-winning game designer and the cofounder BumbleBear Games.
