I Clever Square sono una band indie rock, nata a Ravenna nel 2005 e operativa a Bologna. Al leader Giacomo D'Attorre - songwriter, cantante e chitarrista - si sono di recente aggiunti in line-up Francesco Lima Andrea Ferriani e Andrea Napolitano. Dopo quattro anni di pausa, il nuovo album - intitolato semplicemente "Clever Square" è il loro terzo album ufficiale. Il titolo del disco, omonimo, è un ulteriore indizio di ripartenza, anzi una dichiarazione di riconquista. Quella della musica, di cui Giacomo si è riappropriato appieno. Dalla nascita della band, avvenuta in un garage di Ravenna durante l’estate del 2005, e dall’originario approccio lo-fi, il turning point è stato infatti rappresentato dai più elaborati Natural Herbal Pills e Nude Cavalcade, pubblicati rispettivamente nel 2013 e 2015 da Flying Kids Records. Clever Square, adesso, inaugura un capitolo del tutto nuovo con brani risalenti al periodo che va dal 2015 al 2017, a eccezione di un paio di episodi più datati. Lo stile è legato a doppio filo all’intramontabile indie rock americano, contrassegnato da estetica slacker ed esploso a cavallo degli anni 80/90, che Giacomo non nasconde di prediligere e riesce a far brillare di luce propria. “È la musica con cui sono cresciuto e in cui mi identifico. Per me, significa possibilità di esprimersi per ciò che si è. Tuttora, nel 2019, credo sia importante suonare e basta, avere qualcosa da dire e dirlo senza fronzoli, in maniera diretta e spontanea. In realtà non è semplice né scontato, ma è la lezione che ho imparato e provo a mettere in atto”. La scaletta di Clever Square mette in fila dieci canzoni, ciascuna provvista di autonomia ma funzionale all’essenziale quadro d’insieme, che rendono omaggio a una leggendaria generazione di outsider come Neutral Milk Hotel, Guided By Voices, Dinosaur Jr., Lemonheads, Pavement e Sebadoh, finendo per trovarsi in sintonia con nomi più attuali come Courtney Barnett, Car Seat Headrest o Kurt Vile.

Clever Square are an indie rock band, formed in Ravenna in 2005 and based in Bologna. After a four-year break up, the new album - simply entitled "Clever Square" - has been released by Bronson Recordings on May 24, 2019. Let's re-go. The eponymous title of the record is an indication of restart, but also a declaration of reconquest because Giacomo has fully regained his love in making music. From the group foundation, which took place in a garage in Ravenna during the summer of 2005, and from the original lo-fi approach, the turning point was represented by the more elaborate Natural Herbal Pills and Nude Cavalcade, published respectively in 2013 and in 2015 by Flying Kids Records. Clever Square inaugurates a completely new chapter made up of songs dating back to the period from 2015 to 2017, with the exception of a couple of older tracks. The style is closely linked to American indie rock, timeless genre marked by a slacker aesthetic and exploded at the turn of the 80s/90s, that Giacomo manages to make it shine in his own way. “It’s the kind of music I grew up with and I identify with. For me, it means the possibility of expressing oneself for what one really is. In 2019, I think it’s still important just to play, have something to say and say it in a direct and spontaneous way. In reality, it’s not simple or obvious but it’s the lesson I learned and I try to put into practice”. Clever Square’s tracklist includes ten songs, each of them autonomous but functional to the essential overall picture, that pay tribute to a legendary generation of outsiders like Neutral Milk Hotel, Guided By Voices, Dinosaur Jr., Lemonheads, Pavement and Sebadoh, in tune with present-day names such as Courtney Barnett, Car Seat Headrest or Kurt Vile.
