Mid6 and Mid6 Mini review by Remi Petersen surfing the iconic Jeffreys Bay (J Bay).
Filmed by JBAY TV.
A couple of years ago I was randomly sent a clip of @remi_petersen riding a 7’10 Mid6 at JBay. I reached out to see if he minded me posting it and it turned out to go pretty viral with over 400k views.
I remember Remi saying at the time that he had never really ridden a mid length before and he couldn’t believe how well the Mid6 matched the waves speed, curves and just how fun it was. For me this was so validating because I’m so often telling people to not be scared of the length and that a big board doesn’t necessarily have to be hard to ride. Remi absolutely shredded the bag out of the 7’10, the largest Mid6 we make, straight off the bat!
For me there were a few big takeaways from his review. The advantages he felt on a Mid over a gun in good waves. Big boards aren’t necessarily hard to turn and epoxy done right is also good in pumping surf. He found the technology of both the red and black construction handled the size, speed and wind with absolutely no problems. No surprise to me, but great to be felt under the feet of someone of his calibre straight away. Most people probably don’t know that Yu Sumitomo‘s dad to Tomatsu used to make Olympic grade sailboards many decades ago, so the ability and understanding of how to make strong light boards work at speeds we don’t usually reach as surfers is all part of their heritage at @Thunderboltsurf
