STORYLINE:
Philippine candidates brought their star-studded campaigns to a raucous end on Saturday amid concerns over bloody clashes, possible terror attacks and claims of plots to rig the vote that have raised the spectre of post-election trouble.
The presidential race is largely seen as a showdown between incumbent Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and opposition party candidate, film star Fernando Poe Jr., who have led in the opinion polls.
But underdogs claim the polls may have been manipulated to pave the way to influence voters in favour of Arroyo ahead of Monday''s election.
More than 50-thousand candidates are running for about 17-thousand public offices, including president, vice president, senators, congressmen and local positions.
Hundreds of thousands of troops and police were placed on their highest alert amid almost daily election-related violence that has killed 82 and threats from Marxist and Muslim guerrillas.
Calls for vigilance against violence and fraud resonated nationwide.
Arroyo, exuding confidence after overtaking Poe in the most recent polls, urged "reconciliation and healing from all camps" and assured fast investigation of fraud allegations.
One report gave her a 7 percentage point lead over Poe, but said many of the 43 (m) million voters haven''t made up their minds.
But an opposition senatorial candidate claimed on Saturday that Arroyo was manipulating pre-poll surveys to swing undecided voters in her favour ahead of next week''s presidential elections.
Former Senator Francisco Tatad, a member of opposition front-runner Poe''s Coalition of United Filipinos, called on Arroyo to withdraw and warned she wouldn''t be able to govern if she won the election on Monday by cheating.
But National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales has accused the opposition of plotting a campaign of violence, including bombings and huge protests, if it loses.
