In 1964, following the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, USS Constellation patrolled the South China Sea, just 100 miles off the coast of Vietnam. Tensions were rising as the United States prepared for a deeper military commitment in South-East Asia. Although large-scale combat had not yet begun, the carrier’s crew remained on high alert, carrying out flight operations, training missions, and reconnaissance patrols.
