For the past four years, I have competed in an indoor asphalt race called the Rumble in Fort Wayne (Fort Wayne, IN). Each year, I give my best attempt at winning this race. This feat is only made more difficult by the difference between my car and most of the others. The rules for this division try to limit entry to only race cars designed to run on dirt, but are too broad to accomplish it. Most (90%+) drivers have one-of-a-kind, custom built asphalt cars which barely conform to the rules. All of my 600s are Hyper Racing dirt cars. My dad and I wash the dirt off, stiffen the suspension, lower the car, and leave the rest up to my driving ability. That being said, this weekend had its ups and downs.
Most of Friday was disappointing, only timing 11th out of 22. Fast forward to the feature when I was up to fifth place, and unfortunately had contact with a car who lost control, bending my steering arm beyond drivability.
Yesterday (Saturday) went a bit smoother, starting out with a better-handling car and a 9th-quickest time out of 22 cars. I was lucky with the 9-car invert to start me first in the third heat. My pole position was easy to maintain, setting me up for a first place feature starting position thanks to the top three invert. To begin the feature, the second place car jumped the start and took the lead on lap one. I ended up finishing second to that same car. It's not quite the win, but it's the closest I've been!
Thanks so much to the following for their contribution, products, and services:
Hyper Racing
Dave Orange Engines
TSL Shocks
Kelly Racing Fuels
'Liquid' Lou Cicconi Racing
...and my parents Vicki Brian Lindsay for giving it their all alongside me, all year long. I don't thank them enough!
