Surah Yaseen (سُورَةُ يس) is the 36th chapter of the Quran, located in the 22nd and 23rd juz’. It is a Makkan surah consisting of 83 verses (ayat), 733 words, and around 3,000 letters. It is one of the most famous and frequently recited surahs in the Muslim world.
Name and Significance
Named after the two disconnected letters "Yā Sīn" (يس) that open the surah (verses 1–2).
Known as "the Heart of the Quran" (Qalb al-Qurān) based on a widely circulated hadith reported in Tirmidhi and others:
“Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Qurān is Yā Sīn.”
(Graded weak by many scholars, but the surah remains highly beloved.)
The Prophet ﷺ reportedly said:
“Whoever recites Surah Yā Sīn seeking the pleasure of Allah, his past sins will be forgiven.” (Tirmidhi, Darimi – authenticity debated, but encouragement to recite it is widespread)
It is commonly recited:
For the dying or deceased (to ease the soul’s departure)
In times of difficulty
Every night or morning for blessings
On behalf of the dead
Main Themes of Surah Yaseen
The surah can be divided into several key sections:
Oath by the Quran and affirmation of Prophethood (1–12)
Allah swears by the wise Quran that Muhammad ﷺ is indeed a sent messenger.
Warning to those who reject the message; their fate is sealed if they persist in disbelief.
The story of the people of the city (Antioch hypothesis) (13–32)
A town rejected the messengers sent to them.
Allah sent two messengers, then a third to support them, but they were denied.
One believer from the town (referred to as Habib an-Najjar in tafsir) stood up defending the messengers and was martyred.
He was told: “Enter Paradise” and wished his people knew about the reward of faith.
Signs of Allah in creation (33–44)
The dead earth revived by rain
Night and day, sun and moon
Ships sailing on the sea — all signs of Allah’s power and mercy.
The reality of Resurrection and Judgment Day (45–68)
People are warned: “Fear what is before you and what is behind you.”
On the Day of Judgment, disbelievers will be driven to Hell, regretting their denial.
Description of the two groups: companions of Paradise vs. companions of the Fire.
Oneness of Allah (Tawhid) and refutation of shirk (69–83)
The Prophet ﷺ is not a poet; the Quran is a divine revelation.
Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Allah.
All will return to Him; He is Able over all things.
Ends with a powerful reminder: “So glory be to Him in Whose hand is the dominion of all things, and to Him you will be returned.” (83)
Why is it so beloved and recited?
Comprehensive summary of core Islamic beliefs: Prophethood, Tawhid, Resurrection, Paradise & Hell.
Beautiful rhythm and flow (very soothing when recited).
Short enough to memorize and recite daily.
Traditionally believed to bring ease at death and forgiveness of sins.
In many Muslim cultures, reciting Yā Sīn is the go-to surah for almost every spiritual need — from seeking healing to praying for the deceased.
May Allah make us among those who recite it with understanding and sincerity. Ameen.
