Join me for a peaceful walk around Hatchet Pond and Little Hatchet Pond, one of the most scenic and wildlife-rich areas of the New Forest. This route explores open heathland, quiet woodland paths, and the still waters of two beautiful forest ponds, offering a real sense of space, calm, and natural variety.

Hatchet Pond is the largest area of open water in the New Forest, created in medieval times to supply water for iron workings. Today it’s a haven for birds and wildlife, with wide views across the water often reflecting the sky, surrounding pines, and roaming ponies. Just a short distance away, Little Hatchet Pond feels more hidden and intimate, tucked among trees and heath, and often alive with birdsong.

Along the walk you’ll experience classic New Forest scenery — sandy tracks, ancient woodland, open heath, and wetland edges — all shaped by centuries of forest management and grazing. It’s an area well known for its seasonal changes, from summer dragonflies and wildflowers to winter light, mist, and migrating birds.
