Today we continued our discussion of Rabbinic views of the afterlife, as seen in the Talmud. We continued to read from Tractate Shabbat, 152a, which discusses Jewish mourning practices (in particular, shiva) as both providing comfort for the living and guaranteeing peaceful repose for the dead.
We moved our discussion to Ketubot 111b, in which R. Elazar and R. Yochanan debate the matter of who will be eligible for bodily resurrection in the world-to-come, with one asserting that only Torah scholars are eligible, and the other asserting that common, unlearned Jews are also eligible. A surprising "harmonization" of these divergent viewpoints is brought, just in time to learn from Hiyya bar Yosef that those who are resurrected will come back to life... fully clothed!
